"The Chinese Wall”
The Group Rep opens their 44th consecutive season with The Chinese Wall (Die Chinesische Mauer), written by Swiss playwright Max Frisch, translated by James. L. Rosenberg, directed by Larry Eisenberg, produced for the Group Rep by Lloyd Pedersen. Part tragedy, comedy, history and satire, this wildly unpredictable theatrical event rivals and parallels today’s headlines, making an astounding comment on a seemingly farcical political arena. This 1946 anti-fascist play is being presented as a satire of the Trump administration. What sort of emperor would delight in the completion of a protective wall (The Great Wall of China) that could reach from New York to Berlin? The play opens Friday, January 26 at 8:00 pm, runs January 26 – March 11. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 pm, Sunday matinees at 2:00 pm.
Talk-back Sundays: February 11 and February 25 after the matinee. Lonny Chapman Theatre, 10900 Burbank Boulevard, North Hollywood 91601.
“Swiss playwright, Frisch, wrote this “timely” play in 1946. Yet, its satire and theatricality make an astounding comment on today’s seemingly farcical political arena. What sort of emperor would delight in the completion of a protective wall (The Great Wall of China) that could reach from New York to Berlin? Part tragedy, comedy, history, farce, and satire this wildly unpredictable theatrical event knows no bounds as it blends well-known characters from literature with real life historical people and places them all together on an ethereal stage that rivals and parallels today’s headlines.”
