What a FANTASTIC show!!!  DeeDee Rescher as SHIRLEY VALENTINE and directed by Andrew Barnicle combined with an extremely witty and colorful script by Willy Russell, creates an evening of theatre not to be missed at the Falcon Theatre in Burbank.

SHIRLEY VALENTINE is a woman stifled by a mundane life and routine, and more specifically her husband Joe’s routine.  She talks to the “wall” as a friend and confidant.  But how does Shirley tell Joe that her friend Jane has won a trip to Greece and invites her to go?  How will Joe react? What ensues is life changing for Shirley, and for all the people in her life.

This one-woman play, and DeeDee Rescher’s superb performance as Shirley, a middle-aged housewife from Liverpool, brings her to a place where she rediscover her love of life and her transformation back to the Shirley Valentine of her youth.   “When do we become a different person… frightened of life beyond the wall.”  Here we meet all the people in Shirley’s life.  Her daughter Malandra and street poet son Brian, her neighbor, and a rival from her school days, Marjorie Majors.  As Shirley puts it…”We allow ourselves to live a little life when inside we was capable of so much more.  Why do we have dreams and hopes if they can’t be used?”

Willy Russell’s fine play continues to deliver joy and connection with each word.  Andrew Barnicle’s skilled direction impacts this production. Terrific set and costume design by Bruce Goodrich, lighting design by Jeremy Pivnick, sound design by Corinne Carrillo, each one contributing to an already wonderful performance.

Dreams are never in the place we expect them to be.  I have seen some terrific plays, but this one goes to the top of the list.  SHIRLEY VALENTINE performed by DeeDee Rescher is comedic and poignant.  This is a 10 out of 10 performance.  A MUST SEE!!!
