"tHis Is Very IMPORTANT" is a one-woman show sheds a light on the lives of these women, the people in their lives, public perception and what we think we know about HIV.
HIV doesn't discriminate, people do.
Don't let the serious subject matter scare you. This show is enjoyable, and you just might discover something about yourself. The encore, one-night only performance on Monday, November 5 is free as part of The BINGE Fringe Festival of Free Theatre.
Why did you create this show?
Because we aren't talking about HIV, AIDS or Safe Sex anymore, and in the U.S. a woman is diagnosed with HIV every 35 minutes. And 61% of those women are women of color. Yet, no one outside of the HIV/AIDS community and organizations are talking about these numbers, HIV or AIDS. It’s been 30+ years since HIV/AIDS became an epidemic, yet the numbers of diagnosis in 2017 and deaths in 2016 are heartbreaking.
It's a tough subject to cover. What can audiences expect?
Don't let the serious or tough subject matter fool you. This show is very entertaining. The audience can expect to laugh, cry, have an ah-ha moment (or few), learn and laugh some more. It will definitely be an enjoyable night of theatre.
Is there something you would like to highlight?
Rahvaunia is not HIV positive, but she is excited about her journey with “tHis Is Very IMPORTANT” and being able to use her talents to spark conversation and raise awareness. Her mission is to get this piece seen by as many people and women as possible, especially women of color. Her “sisters in ethnicity” are being greatly affected by HIV/AIDS and it’s time we start talking about it.
"What good are my gifts if I don’t use them to encourage change, and inspire those to do their part in helping make a difference." - Rahvaunia
