The Ride of Silence is a worldwide event commemorating those who have been injured or lost which cycling in the public roadway. Started in 2003, thousands of cyclists convene at hundreds of locations across the globe to participate in this silent ride. In the City of Los Angeles, 25 cyclists have lost their lives from 2016 – 2017, not counting the four recent tragedies in South LA and Woodland Hills.
Although cyclists have a legal right to share the road with motorists, the motoring public often isn't aware of these rights, and sometimes not aware of the cyclists themselves. In 2003, Chris Phelan organized the first Ride of Silence in Dallas after endurance cyclist Larry Schwartz was hit by the mirror of a passing bus and was killed. (Read the full history here...)
For the third year in a row, the Los Angeles County Bicycle Coalition https://la-bike.org/event/rideofsilence2018/ will be host a ride out of the North Hollywood Metro Red Line Station. The presentation will start at 6:30pm and as a show of unison across the globe, the ride will be leaving exactly at 7:00pm. This is a large ride and we’ve consistently had a media presence, so please arrive on time.
The ride will cover seven miles and all cyclists should bring a helmet and lights. RSVP and show support for those we’ve lost.
