Hot Dog on a Stick - Janet Bernson
So what is the them of the show and how did came up with it?
The pieces are mixed media, combining the items from to-go containers with other trash I have found and stories/poems/rants.
I’ve awakened myself to how much takeout and “disposable” trash I consume and what’s lying around in my immediate environment. It’s not because I never thought about it. I’ve been using discards to make art for quite awhile. But this year I chose to focus more deeply and work with the thoughts in and around our disposable society.
The art is all different. I am eclectic in my approach. There is humor, politics, satire, poetry, interwoven in the exhibit.
What's your background?
I’ve been an expressive arts facilitator/therapist for about 30 years, working with trauma survivors in shelters, transitional facilities, probation….etc. I also wrote plays and directed theatre here in the NoHo in the nineties - at the Bitter Truth Theatre which is now the FAT DOG!
When my husband died from cancer five years ago I knew it was I who needed to heal myself from the trauma of caregiving and grief. Much of the work I have done since has been an outgrowth of my internal process and subsequent transformation.

Why did you choose Theatre 68 as your exhibit space?
My husband, Max Middleton, was a member of Theatre 68. Artistic Director, Ronnie Marmo, was so supportive through our journey. When I told Ronnie I wanted to do an art show - he said "let’s do it here" he was all for it. Theatre 68 has two great spaces - one with raked seats and the other the Flex. The Flex is perfect for exhibiting my art.
