Theatre Reviews and Interviews

Nicky and the Angels

Nicky and The Angels review- It’s a sweet, funny and quite moving musical with some lovely songs and the actors do them all full justice. The characters are perfect for the times and the supporting cast is just as great as the three leads. How wonderful to go to a small theatre in Sherman Oaks and see a new musical about three kids from the 80s in L.A. singing songs about love, fear, friendship and growing up. It made me long for the age I was once, with big hair, neon outfits, leg warmers, the best music ever and the world at my feet.

Ophelia

Ophelia. The story resonated, the discovery and rediscovery these characters make through each other and with each other made an impact…the way only the most brilliant art can do. It’s extremely funny too, in a very clever, dry way.

HIGH MAINTENANCE

High Maintenance is a comic, albeit an unnerving glimpse into our near future. Full of wonderful observational comedy deftly directed and artfully acted. A sobering stare into the future of art as a whole.

Versified!: The Human Equation

A NoHo Arts theatre review of Versified!: The Human Equation, an extraordinary ensemble of actors under the direction of Sonny Lira, bringing the life and wonder of Bob Gossom’s unique verses to the stage.

De Maeyer-Kende Violin & Piano Duo Review

De Maeyer-Kende Violin & Piano Duo Review. The duo of De Maeyer and Kende not only bring precision, passion, and virtuosity, but they also bring that added ingredient that is hard to describe, something indefinable, magical even. It is like that secret ingredient that makes a dish unforgettable.

Faliks•Cani Piano & Violin Duo

Faliks*Cani Piano & Violin Duo. Inna Faliks at the piano was mesmerizing and valorous. I come for her brilliance, but I stay for the revelation she gives to the pieces. Roberto Cani on violin is in a class of his own, playing with exquisite tenderness and explosive flair. Together, these two are sublime.

SoCal Concert Pianist Jason Stoll

A NoHo Arts music review of SoCal Concert Pianist Jason Stoll at The Athena Foundation for the Arts.

Black Bouquet’s “Pray to the Knife”

A NoHo Arts music review of Black Bouquet’s “Pray to the Knife” album and video release. North Carolina-based Black Bouquet’s new album “Pray to the Knife” is a gorgeously dark poetic wall of sound, full of breathless vocals and haunting guitars. It’s theatrical and epic but the payoff is intensely intimate and truthful and insanely fun…in the darkest emo way.

Sines’s “Gravity”

A NoHo Arts music review of Sines’s “Gravity” album. The tracks are all techno based, but with Kitty’s intense sound, like warm ice, they become more poetic, emotional, poignant and acutely commercial. Jason Wann’s gorgeous lyrics tell the story of a man navigating a neurotypical world with the soul of an autistic space poet. He unfolds his life like a flower opening and with Kitty’s searingly authentic voice filling the sounds he makes with meaning and purpose, their partnership is something utterly unforgettable.
