The purpose of Black History Month is to promote awareness of African American history to the general public. African-American history is filled with the tales of inspiring individuals—many of whom overcame great odds to leave their mark on the United States as well as abroad. NoHo Gallery LA ‘s Black History Month Art Show presents artists who portray the history, the current state of affairs and the future direction of Black & Afro-American Art.
Long after slavery was abolished, noteworthy African-Americans left their country to free themselves from racism and segregation to find freedom of artistic expression abroad. Josephine Baker is a classic example who left for France in 1924. There is even a street named after her in Paris. In fact there is a play dedicated to her being performed in the center that houses NoHo Gallery LA, (J.E.T. Studios). The play is called “Bananas”. Sloan Robinson masterfully plays the part of Josephine Baker. A must see!
Then there was the yoke of racism rearing its ugly head during the McCarthy Era provoking noteworthy African Americans to escape the United States for havens in Europe, Africa and other countries. In fact, I met several as a teenager & young adult growing up in in Rome, Italy and Montreux, Switzerland. I will never, ever forget the spectacular performance of Nina Simone at the Montreux Jazz Festival.
In 1974 President Ford designated February as Black History Month, 85 years after Carter Woodson proposed to have a week dedicated to Black Americans in order to improve “self- esteem and help eliminate prejudices”.
