The NoHo Arts District. Com Team has been a long time advocate of arts in education. Research consistently shows that the arts leverage student achievement and development far beyond raising test scores in reading and math. Participation in the arts build essential skills like innovation, creativity and critical thinkng. It keeps kids interested in school. Don't we need to decrease the 57% dropout rate in many of our high schools and save an at risk youth from a life of crime? Each of us can help a local North Hollywood youth have the benefits of arts programs.

We spoke with Bill Kueppers, a volunteer for 18 years in the music department at Walter Reed Middle School.

"Music and the Arts have been treated as a nonessential part of education for as long as I have been involved (18yrs). So what has kept the program alive and well? Dedicated staff, parents, students and community members see the importance of arts programming. The miniscule amount of our tax dollars that reach a classroom is an insult. That is why fundraising for these programs is almost second nature now to keep these programs and the level of achievement attained at Walter Reed and other schools alive and well.  This in the "Center of the Entertainment Industry" is baffling. These programs give back so much to the community. The Music department had just garnered the prestigious Music Center Bravo Award for 2011. Walk into any Music and Art classroom and you will find hundreds, yes hundreds, of trophies which certainly attest to the effort put forth and dedication of all involved over the years. The most recent fundraiser in the spring raised over $8,000 for Cancer research. There are many other community functions that these programs support such as the recent 9/11 dedication in the park. Our annual musical Bye Bye Birdie this year, involves all the Music and Arts departments and provided great entertainment for the community."

Here is how you can help...
The World Class Music and Arts program of Walter Reed Middle School will provide an evening of entertainment with a top act from Las Vegas. This is an opportunity to see the Carson's fantastic family oriented "Magical Mystery Show" and at the same time contribute to the Music and Arts programs at Walter Reed Middle School. The Carson's web site carsonentertainment.com will give you a preview of their activities and their act. All this without going to Las Vegas and for a cost far less than the trip there.

If you want a great evening of entertainment, come see the Carson's on Friday October 21st at Walter Reed Middle School, 4525 Irvine Ave., North Hollywood CA starting at 6:00pm (pizza etc.) with the show at 7:00pm . Tickets are $15.00 for adults $10.00 for students and seniors. Call 818-487-7600 x154. Tickets are being sold in advance to avoid long lines.

Even if you are unable to attend a contribution of any amount would be greatly appreciated. You can rest assured that 100% of the funds raised will make it to the classroom and the competent staff will use it well.
