October 11 is National Coming Out Day, North Hollywood. It's an internationally observed awareness day for "coming out " and discussion about gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) issues. National Coming Out Day is a time to publicly display gay pride and many choose this day to come out to their family, friends, co-workers and themselves.

The civil awareness day was established in1988 by Robert Eichberg, a psychologist and the author of "Coming Out: An Act of Love," and Jean O'Leary, a lesbian activist and former nun turned political leader from Los Angeles. The October 11 date was chosen because it was the anniversary of the 1987 National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The purpose of the march and of National Coming Out Day is to promote government and public awareness of gay, bisexual, lesbian and transgender rights and to celebrate homosexuality.

So today, North Hollywood, take the time to support your friends or family members as they take the step to proudly "come out." As the Human Rights Campaign perfectly states it: "Whether you're lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or a straight ally, be proud of who you are and your support for LGBT equality this Coming Out Day!"
