The Tenth Annual ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS (the ADAs) were celebrated by a joyous crowd of theatre artists and producers at the El Portal Theatre in the NoHo Arts District on Monday, Dec. 1st.

Twenty-four theatres and producing companies received nominations this season, representing a total of fifty-one productions.

NBC’s Fritz Coleman emceed the ceremony, assisted by Fred Willard, Dee Wallace-Stone, John Rubinstein, Jack Riley, Chuck McCann, Paul Linke, among others, serving as Awards Presenters.

The evening commenced with a reception in the spacious El Portal lobby, after which City Councilman Tom LaBonge made a few remarks. The ceremony, running a brisk two hours and fifteen minutes, was followed by a catered party in the lobby.

Entertainment was provided by the nominated production, “SANTASIA ROCKS”, which played at the Whitmore-Lindley Theatre Center last season. They did three of their ”sequences” in total, receiving a standing ovation for their finale, “Sledding”. They are opening a new version: “SANTASIA RELOADED” on Dec. 5th  at the Whitmore-Lindley.

The El Portal Theatre, The Road Theatre Company and Zombie Joe’s Underground Theatre Company each received five awards, followed by the Whitmore-Lindley Theatre Center with four awards and three apiece for Actors Workout Studio, Alliance Repertory Company, Fremont Centre Theatre, Whitefire Theatre and the Woodland Hills Theatre.

Individually, “CESAR & RUBEN” led the way with five awards, followed by “THE WOMAN IN BLACK” and “BLOCKAGE” with four awards each. “MEET ME AT THE OAK” and “THE HOSTAGE” each received three awards, as did “THE TALE OF CHICKEN LITTLE” in the Youth & Family Theatre categories. Ed Begley, Jr. was awarded a special “Beacon of Light Award “ for his efforts to spotlight professional live theatre in the Valley.

The entire evening was directed by award-winning director and Broadway actress, Pamela Hall.

The ADA Awards are sponsored by Valley Theatre League, and produced for the League by Edmund Gaynes and Bianconi & Associates.
