5 benefits of risk-taking

“I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it.” — Pablo Picasso

I don’t know about you, but just writing and reading those words makes me feel a bit queasy.

The idea of risk activates an initial response of defence, fear and admittedly, exhilaration.  I’ve been programmed to see risk-taking as negative, unwise and dangerous, but in my experience, the lessons, growth, and opportunity that come through taking risks outweigh the failures and disappointments by a long shot.

It’s not just a stuntman or Formula One race car driver that encounters risks daily. Being a freelance producer, entrepreneur, solopreneur, or just living involves risk.  We get in our cars, we wave goodbye to our kids as they go off to school, we speak up in a meeting, and all of this involves an element of stepping outside our comfort zones.

What do you do when you may be aware of a situation or perspective that may not be popular and it feels very risky to bring it out in the open?  Do you feel the risk and do it anyway?

In network television like any corporation, you tend to work with a lot of players.  There are many departments, execs, clients and agencies involved in decision making and it can be a delicate dance to keep everyone happy and feeling cared for…cause that is what it boils down to most of the time; people want to be heard…but that’s another blog subject.

In the please everyone world of wanting to be the dream maker not the dream killer I find myself having to speak my truth (what I consider an important part of my job) and many times it is not what clients want to hear.  Saying no when there is not enough money to do something safely or yes when you really have to hire that many special effects people to make it happen, can make you appear like the bad guy but from my perspective, it’s worth the risk.  I get to grow in ways only risk provides and the impact has always turned positive.

You may be contemplating skydiving as your risk-taking activity but if you are still wondering how risk may benefit you, here’s what I’ve experienced.

When we risk

  • We learn we can go beyond our self-limitations

  • We find new levels of confidence and resilience

  • We gain perspective and skills we might not have thought were possible

  • We change our relationship to success and failure

  • We discover new capabilities and possibilities along the way

What will you risk this week?

See you on set!
