What moves you?

“Your present circumstances don't determine where you can go; they merely determine where you start.”

Nido Qubein

How are you?  I mean it, how are you doing these days?  I’m curious about what’s happening with you and if you are feeling happy and inspired.

Do you ever wonder where inspiration comes from?  Does it seem to live more in others or flow abundantly inside you? Are you easily able to tap into it or do you find yourself in seemingly long periods of drought and feeling stuck? And what does it have to do anyway with our jobs, or lives or loves?

Curious about how we define inspiration I looked it up and was somewhat surprised.

noun: inspiration

the process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something, especially to do something creative.the quality of being inspired, especially when evident in something.

  • a person or thing that inspires.
  • a sudden brilliant, creative, or timely idea
  • the drawing in of breath; inhalation.
  • an act of breathing in; an inhalation.

Did you catch it?  The last two definitions of inspiration…. it is in our breath!

I’ve always felt that the state of well-being and inspiration was something that was an innate part of us but so much of what we hear and learn tells us it takes effort, determination, and work to get there and stay there. But what if that wasn’t accurate?

What if feeling inspired is as easy as breathing?  What if how we think about inspiration is exactly what is keeping us from the experience of being inspired and contributing to us feeling disconnected?  What if, and warning radical thought ahead, inspiration is not dependent on anything outside of ourselves?

I for one treasure the moments where I recognize I am in the flow, feeling inspired and creative.  Where I am present and available to problem solve, explore, collaborate and create from my greatest potential. And I find that place more often when I let go of any thinking around how it should look, feel or be. When I don’t effort to get there I find it is there patiently waiting for me as my natural state.  Ahhhhhh.

Inspiration takes place in real time present moment reality and it brings with it renewed possibilities and perspective.  It carries its own momentum that propels us forward if we let it.  It works when we are trying to figure out how to make up 3 hours on a shoot or if we are juggling 3 kids and their schedules.  It’s in the unnoticed things or in a greatest works of art.  It’s in the nudge that tells us go outside and play, to take an exotic trip or a trip to the grocery store.

So here’s to inspiration our natural state of being!  May we shift into the knowing that just under the commotion of our thoughts lies all the wisdom and creativity needed to experience a life of joy and fulfillment.

See you on set!
