Daily Risks to make you happy.

“Of all the words of mice and men, the saddest are, “It may have been.” Kurt Vonnegut

Let's face it. Life is risky business. We take chances every day and truthfully, without taking risks, you don't truly live… you merely exist. And the funny thing is you may not even recognize or give yourself credit for the small risks you do take everyday. Like crossing the street, trying out a new dish, asking someone out, or volunteering to take on a new client. No outcome is ever 100 percent certain and that means that any attempt at anything has an equal chance of complete failure as much as success. Including getting to the other side of the street!

In production I pretty much have one chance to get it right. The weeks spent in preparationall lead to the day when throngs of people show up on set for a day of shooting and everything has to be choreographed just right to get the intended outcome. And it's a risk. Kind of like a moon landing or a marriage proposal.

So how can we harness the power of the small risks we take daily to inspire us to take the seemingly scarier risks in life? Like taking a pay cut for an opportunity to explore a new career, asking for that chance to direct that commercial, or applying for that internship at the studio even if you're almost 30?

Whether I succeed or fail, taking a risk reminds me I am alive and gives me faith in my courage and willingness to expand my abilities even more. The risks I took a year ago feel more comfortable now and the ones in front of me will feel that way soon too

If you feel like pushing your boundaries, discovering your edges, and are seeking the thrill of trying something new, consider exploring places in your life where risk can bring you rewards. Consider what it's costing you to not take a risk. You may be protecting your security and maintaining the status quo, but in doing so sacrificing your health, your creativity, your sense of fulfillment and aliveness.

Here's 10 opportunities to risk that are sure to open up possibilities in your life for living fully and following your dreams.

  • Risk getting it wrong
  • Risk failing
  • Risk looking like a fool
  • Risk asking for help
  • Risk Speaking your truth
  • Risk Saying I love you
  • Risk forgiving yourself and someone else
  • Risk saying yes
  • Risk saying no
  • Risk letting go and starting something new

And if you want to see an example of someone who took a risk, check out the documentary about the youngest person to circumnavigate the world. It's truly inspiring!

See you on set!
