master bedroom interior design tips

Now that we’re back inside this week, lets take a look at the master bedroom. A few weeks ago we tackled the master bathroom and how you might want to coordinate it with the bedroom. We apply those same principles here as well. Both spaces really work as one in terms of color and style. So when you’re working on one, keep the other space in mind.

There are so many things you can do to rev up your master bedroom. You have lamps, bedding, art, rugs, paint, accessories and window treatments to work with. Again, just remember you can work in stages and go at your own pace.

Lets start with the basics. Pick a color scheme that fits your personality. Most people are comfortable using about four to five colors. Two main colors and two to three accent colors. My advice is to use the most neutral as your main colors, specifically on the walls and flooring. This will give your palette longevity and allow you to change when you feel the need or get bored. Buts lets backup a bit and start this process.

The most prominent piece is usually the bed. So why not start there with the sheets, comforter and shams. If you want to make it simple use a bed in a bag set. It usually contains everything you need and they’re not too expensive. Here’s a tip, you don’t need to use everything from the set. Add different sheets or shams and accessory pillows. By adding a few key pieces to the set, you’ve just created two sets to use. But if you want to be more creative, which I prefer, then mix it up. I like to mix patterns and fabrics when doing a bed. Just choose one as a starting point and design from there. I ‘d recommend matching the shams and comforter, then adding a really good thread count sheet. This is a place I might spend a bit more money. Nothing feels better at the end of the day than super soft sheets. Now think about adding a coverlet. It goes on the bed like a blanket and adds a classic touch. You simply fold your comforter in thirds and lay over the end of the bed exposing the coverlet and sheets. I always fold the sheets over the coverlet to expose them. You see this look a lot in the high-end decorator magazines. Again these pieces don’t need to cost a fortune. Add a few accessory pillows and you’re finished. Doing just the bedding alone will certainly spice up the master’s design plan.

If you want to take this project a step or two further think about accessories. By this I mean lamps and some art or even a rug. Look at changing your lamps. I mentioned before how I like to visit the Lamps Plus website and Target for options. They have some really good options to choose from. You might only need to replace the shades, which is a money saving tip. Don’t forget to visit Home Good’s, too, for their selection. I really like Home Goods for one stop shopping if I’m on a tight budget. They seem to have almost everything. Most of the time they have a really good rug selection with some good prices. If you’re lucky you might find some great pictures and pillows for your bedroom, too.

As I’ve said in the past, pace yourself and have fun.
