NoHoArtsDistrict.Com Review "RAYNE: An Electronic Experience"
I honestly had no idea what to expect from this production. I have never been to a burlesque show before, but I pride myself on being very open minded, so I was very happy to be there. Fringe is nothing if it is not experimental and innovative and this production of "RAYNE: An Electronic Experience" is absolutely both those things.
RAYN is a performer first and foremost. A gifted vocalist with a beautiful, ethereal voice she sings through the entire performance, all her own really excellent, original songs. Imagine Bjork performing as a fairy burlesque dancer and you will be close to the kind of riveting performance RAYN gives.
The theatre is really a large studio space with chairs positioned all around the walls and the DJ/producer at one end. RAYN welcomes you into the space in her unicorn suit, masked. She immediately puts everyone at ease and playfully positions us where she wants us to be. After introducing herself and stepping out of her outer wear she reveals a very brief dancers costume, glowing gloves and various glow wands and whips which she uses during her dance and her interactions with the audience.
Always gentle and sweet, RAYN sings, dances, caresses and calms. She talks openly with us all, connecting through touch and tease, picking out those who want to participate and somehow knowing exactly how far to go with each of them, all the while extolling the virtues of kindness, love and each other.
I really had a wonderful time. RAYN does get fairly naked, but she does so with the spirit of love more than anything, so it never feels gratuitous, harsh or forced. The proceeds of the production go toward helping sex workers and I think the ethos is really about freeing our minds from the hang ups we all have of nudity and sex, while respecting each other and RAYN.
It was an uplifting and truly beautiful experience, I literally smiled the whole way through her dance and her voice is so exquisite that she sort of transports you somehow. I noticed how every one of us floated out of the room, so I know I wasn’t alone in my joy. All the men were giggling and I think deeply effected by her. She probably blew their minds in a completely different way than they where expecting. "RAYN" is just marvelous and I highly recommend you see her show…Bravo!!!
