Music as activism is an ancient tradition.  American High keeps this well and truly alive with “U.N. Article 14.”

This is music with something to say, with history and thought behind each lyric, pain and, most importantly, with an enormous amount of heart.

The songs are full of sorrow and anger as well as joy. The band clearly plays with their hearts on their sleeves.  The songs are short, under three minutes, which gives them even more of a poetic quality. They are thoughts brilliantly conceived. It is intellectual, funny, inspiring music formed as a reaction to the stupidity of the world and concluded with their gorgeous, urgent harmonies.

I hear The Beetles, I hear Indigo Girls, I hear Nirvana, I hear Tom Petty, I hear Green Day, but mostly I hear American High - existing not in the shadow of these amazing artists but hoisted on their shoulders into the light.

It’s not preachy music, not at all, it just reminds us of the things most of us already believe about the injustices of our world, but ignore because it can be so overwhelming.  Not all the songs are about injustice, there’s a lovely love song, “Fairfield CA,” love found and lost.

It’s just amazing the way they take these dark twisting themes and turn them into these uplifting, catchy, driving, rock songs with heavenly harmonies and brilliant musical phrases all switching up and flipping around as they saw their way along.  Someone has to put this stuff on a movie soundtrack…especially “U.N. Article 14” - it’s the perfect escape song.

I have to see these guys live… Love it!!!
