The Goldwyn Experiment “Avenue B”

This is an interesting mix of an album and morphs in unexpected ways as you listen to it. Part rock, part rap, part Broadway musical, part something dark and in between…all heart.

The prologue track really sets it all up giving us a taste of what’s to come, each track as different as the last.  Think a glam rock Chili Peppers with a little Led Zeppelin and a twist of early Queen for good measure.

This is a performance album, full of big drums, loud guitars and intros to vocals and rap tracks about a young man’s well-travelled life.  The vocals are catchy, and the hooks strong and beautifully produced.  A lot of thought has gone into this album, which feels as concept as is possible in this age of live tracks looped drums and EPs.

Avenue B has a great retro 80s feel. Lots of jazz keys, deep baselines, vibrant high-end guitar battles, and some solid bluesy undertones.  It’s ambitious, complicated and often operatic…in a very cool way.  It’s worth several listenings, the tracks layer and layer and transform as they spiral around ever expanding themes.  They must have had a ball making this.  There are moments you can hear the shear unadulterated bliss of the band and it’s easy to imagine them in the studio, heads bobbing.

If you like rock with a heavy helping of harmonious storytelling you will love “Avenue B” by The Goldwyn Experiment.
