The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is here in Los Angeles, and we welcome them with open arms! This week the ASPCA launched a $25 million animal rescue campaign in an ambitious effort to save thousands of stray animals and pets from shelters that euthanize.
Many times we are in a space that is void of any type of character or architectural flair. Oftentimes, it may seem to be a costly endeavor to add such details. One way to add interest is to use architectural moldings or in this case; wainscoting. This is a relatively easy and cost effective way to add flair and/or interest to any room. It can be as simple as adding trim molding and then paint the middle section or to add additional panels as well.
In today's health and fitness world of online groupon deals, smartphone apps, trendy fitness products, and danger and adventure filled marathons and run-walks, there's so much to choose from to get in shape and stay active. That's a great thing. However, it might be a time to step back and determine ultimately what your ideal fitness and wellness environment should be to keep you motivated long-term and reaching your goals and staying fit for life.
An Eggscellent Way to Celebrate
We’re not the only ones who are consistently celebrating birthdays for our friends and family. You must be doing the same thing as everyone welcomes a new year of life. A friend asked for a few appetizers for her 30th birthday party, and there was nothing to say but ‘Yes!’. Good thing there was a full dozen of Eggland’s Best eggs in the fridge thanks to the Foodbuzz Tastemaker program for Featured Publishers. When life gives you eggs, make quiche. This was not the only dish on the table though. Check out the other three appetizers on our Facebook page, and then check out the full recipe.
Want to know what to try on when shopping for Summer 2014 swimwear? Keep in mind the small details that can help you choose whether to go with an exotic look with print fabrics and tassels or maybe you’re trying to go with a summer goddess look with braided details and neutral solid colors.
If you live in Los Angeles, then you’ve likely seen the many stray or feral cats that roam the streets. Newborn kittens are so adorable and always in high demand, so unfortunately, other (usually older) cats in greater need of care are often left unattended. It’s heartbreaking to see, but there are ways to solve this problem and save many of their lives.
Peru, an extraordinarily diverse country, is home to part of the Andes mountains, a beautiful arid coast, and a large part of the Amazon rainforest. With all of this diversity, it’s no wonder people want to visit here. In addition, Peru is home to Machu Picchu, one South America’s oldest ancient civilizations, and, and iconic location for foreigners to see.
Layers of Goodness
Here is another quick and easy dessert recipe to add to your arsenal. The key ingredient is fresh strawberries, which are pretty much available nearly year-round in Southern California. They are prime for eating as the weather begins to warm in spring and summer, so now is the time to start stocking up on the big, red berries. The other ingredient you’ll need is some fresh whipped cream and chocolate sandwich cookies. Oreos are the best of course. Grab a family-size bag, and start layering!

What Planet Venus Should Know
The most interesting part of our business is hearing about the different perceptions men and women have about one another. We are wired so differently! Here are ten candid comments from some of our male clients about what they wish single women knew.
Over the past few years, lighting has become a key element in design. Its not just used as a utility piece, but has become beautiful centerpieces and jewels for a room. You might need to decide how much or how little the chandelier will shine. Will it determine the style of the room or blend in? Since this is somewhat of a permanent piece, I would try to blend with the style of the house.
Here’s the low down on just a few trends that you will see this summer. The nighties are still very strong influence on what our fashion has come to this season like slip on dresses, flannel, etc. Yes! You can keep all of your favorite outfits.
Go beyond the cosmetic benefits of exercising and eating right. About two weeks into an exercise and diet program, start to write down and record other benefits you may be realizing such as, “feel more flexible,” or, “more energy and endurance at work,” or even, “sleeping better now.” After adopting a healthier lifestyle, the benefits to you will be numerous, each one building on a previous benefit until pretty soon it’s a snowball effect of good things.
We all felt it. This year’s St. Patrick’s Day is the day all of Los Angeles woke up at the same time, including pets! Most of us were still in bed and simply opened our eyes with a blank stare, processing what was happening while holding our breaths. That’s not exactly the same reaction our pets had!
Just like our New Year celebration, the Persian New Year begins at a very specific time. It is based on the sun’s travels, marking the start of Spring–precisely the second the sun crosses the equator. Families gather around a ceremonial display decorated with seven items, all of which belong with the letter “s”, that represent all of the good things we want in life, such as health, wealth, longevity, renewal and more. So in light of Spring and yet another opportunity to celebrate a “new day”, it is high time you try this recipe for a classic Persian dish.
Many people set a goal in the spring to clean out the house, garage, basement, closets, etc. Some set super high goals and expectations and often fail. They make the attempt to clean out a room or two, get discouraged and stop. They haven’t made a plan or realistic goal for themselves. Remember, it’s a process. Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither was the clutter.
One of the main reasons that we decided to go into the dating / matchmaking field was that we wanted to help singles be better prepared for dating. Emotionally prepared, conversationally prepared and behaviorally prepared. People rarely considered what kind of impression they wanted to make or how they wanted to lead. Have you thought about things you want your date to know about you…….or not know about you right away?
Recently my friend Cherie Higgins asked me about a clothing product she saw for sale infused with green coffee and brown algae to "rev up the body’s fat metabolism while creating a slimmer appearance". ( And apparently the active ingredients withstand up to 20 machine washings.)
I have a feeling no one noticed we did not post an Ethnic Exploration at the end of last month. It slipped through the cracks as we both found ourselves wrapped up with individual, Duo and group related projects and events. We’ve do try to maintain a regular posting schedule, especially when it comes to the monthly Guest Test Kitchen and Ethnic Exploration features. Last week I sent an text to Amir that said “Um, did I ever write the Austrian EE?” There were at least 17 question marks and exclamation points, but I’ll spare you the overkill. I accept full responsibility for dropping the ball! You guys are always so forgiving and understanding, so we know that you’ll let it slide. When you see the Austrian sweet treat that landed on our plates, you’ll let it slide with a smile.

My entire past week was spent experiencing the many different cultures and environments during a cross country road trip from Virginia to California. What I discovered, (or should I say confirmed), is that we are the best pet owners in the nation! First, let me acknowledge that I’m perfectly aware how impossible it is for me not to be biased on the subject since I was born and raised here. Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, hooray Californians! We are the BEST! Not only do we live the good life, our pets do too! They’re the most exotic, talented, happy and loyal pets I’ve seen, and it only took a handful of states to compare to for me to realize it.
Many years ago the home building industry introduced these rather large homes that seemed to never end. These homes weren’t your stately Beverly Hills mansions, but new sub divisions with sizes ranging from four to over six thousand square feet.
Creating a network of support and throwing the message out to the Universe every single day that you are adopting a healthier lifestyle is the key to progressing into the true you. I’m not talking New Year’s Eve, early-January-type resolutions of, “I’m going to get in shape this year,” when a few weeks into February all of your health and fitness goals are forgotten. I’m talking true commitment, a whatever-it-takes type of attitude, “This is do or die.”
There’s something about canning that has an air of nostalgia to it. Perhaps your grandparents were the ones who first introduced you to this idea. Or, your parents perhaps. Neither one of us comes from a family of canners, but we do have interest. It’s the perfect way to preserve seasonal freshness of fruits or vegetables when they are at their peak. Almost anything can be canned–tomatoes, beans, peaches, rinds and seeds. It’s an easy, inexpensive way to have food at the tips of your fingers when their season for availability may be far off. Sometimes, though, you just can to can. Not because you necessarily want summer corn in the dead of winter, but just because you want something to break through the boredom of a slow Saturday afternoon. Unequipped with tongs and mason jars, you can still pull off a means of veggie preservation. You can always find a way around an obstacle.
When I first found out about Angelica Chavez a local young fashion designer I had to contact her to find out what is like to be a young entrepreneur and promising designer, so I set up a Q&A to get to know her.
Is it too late to wish everyone a Happy New Year? Hopefully not. You’ve probably made some resolutions, changes, promises, goals, whatever you choose to call them. The title is inconsequential, but the meaning is the same. It’s the time of year when you may be feeling antsy for what lies ahead, and that internal energy can be quite the ember to start a fire! Much success with your plans. Feel free to share them with us. We hope you enjoyed the holidays with your friends and family, and thanks for stopping in as we finally start off this New Year with a new recipe. If you’re thinking it’s about time, well, you don’t have to wait any longer.
One of my favorite design styles is that of The Hamptons in New York. The fresh, clean look is inspirational. The crisp feel of the light or natural colored linen slip covered over a soft cushy sofa or overstuffed chair really sets the tone. Paired with a beautifully dark stained plank floor or a whitewashed floor, lightweight linen or cotton drapery panels adds to the feel and atmosphere needed to achieve this look.
Not to be mistaken with Shabby Chic, the style is slightly more void of the floral, plaids and weathered looking furniture. You’re more likely to see traditional case good pieces in fused with lightly colored fabrics, some reclaimed pieces along with shutters or even wooden blinds on the windows. Here are a few tips to help you achieve The Hamptons look without breaking the bank.
1. Start with light colors. Use beige, sage green, pale green/blue on the walls.
2. Try adding wainscoting painted white for architectural interest.
3. Earth toned or light colors works well for window treatments in cotton or linen.
4. Pair linen upholstered chairs with a rustic or reclaimed wooden table in the dining room. Accent the table with glass hurricanes and candles for the centerpiece.
5. Wicker framed chairs with a great light upholstered sofa and a glass coffee table can work well for a living room. Add nautical styled pillows for accents.
6. Keep accents simple. Wicker baskets, plants, sea grass or jute rugs can finish off a space.
Just remember to be careful when designing your space. Never over do your style. You won’t achieve your desired look and will appear too trendy. Less is more in some cases.
Cultivate the art of romance and celebrate this Valentine’s Day - La dolce vita style
The key to romance and seduction is to create extraordinary moments out of ordinary things. Some of the most meaningful ideas come from simplicity and the heart. Here are a few:
I recently went on a trip to Honolulu, Hawaii and happen to read about it being the #1 happiest city in America. Granted, it's on a pacific island that offers beautiful scenery and mostly sunny and warm weather. But, I started thinking about what creates the "aloha spirit" of Hawaii, which seems to exude happiness from all the locals there. Here are 4 essential ways I believe people in the top happy areas of the United States, and the world for that matter, achieve their happiness.
We are all very familiar with the harnesses, pet sweaters, bells, whistles and toys that our pets know and love. These creations have come to the rescue to protect our pets and add quality to all of our lives. Have you ever wondered how pets managed to stand cold weather before the invention of those adorable little sweaters to keep them warm? Below is a list of genius creations that will have you wondering how we’ve managed until now – everything from year-round allergy protection for your pet to anti-boredom and loneliness ideas for the pets whose owners can’t be home most of the day. Embrace one, or all, your pet(s) will love you more for it!
We like to do a lot of things from scratch. That’s why kneading bread, rolling out pie dough, and beating cream into fluffy soft peaks is fun for us. We like to be hands on with foods and figure out how they work. And how they work best. That’s why you see a bowl of ground, watery nuts above. That, friends, is almond pulp. It is what you’ll find left behind if you make your own almond milk. Maybe you’re wondering to yourself, ‘Self, why are these guys making almond milk when it’s at the store?’ Well, there are lots of things that just seem easy to do by hand, so why not do them. At least once. If it’s not worth the time, effort or cost, then feel free to buy it. But at least you can say you’ve tried to do it. And that, friends, is the only answer we can give.
