Outa the Trunk and into the Driver’s Seat

Why do I keep ending up on dates with guys who are not what my heart desires? And who are not the right match for me at all?!  I want to change this, for the better!  CS

Dear CS,

This is a very common question and frustration.  The truth is - whether you’re a man or a woman, finding someone who feels like a healthy and happy match can be a challenge and a mystery for sure!  But I believe, and my experiences have been showing me, that we definitely have the ability to be more at cause over what we experience in life, and more specifically, what kind of people and love partners we attract.

If you are ready to get out of the trunk and into the driver’s seat in this situation, you must first get clear about what you want, and then practice thoughts, feelings, and actions that support what you want. Taking control of your own life and changing from the inside is the most empowering and effective way to experience changes on the outside.

We are Here to Love Now

Try this simple and powerful approach:

1)
List 3-5 or more things your heart desires in the area of love relationships.  
For example:
•    Date someone who is really wonderful and a great match for me
•    Find the person of my dreams
•    Have a fulfilling and loving relationship that grows into marriage and family
•    Experience lasting mutual and deep love and intimacy with my mate

2)
Next, turn these desires into Afformations.  (If you’re not sure what an Afformation is, take a few minutes and read my previous blog, and then come back to do this!)  “The Right Way to Ask and Receive – Finally!” http://nohoartsdistrict.com/ask-maddisen/item/2284-the-right-way-to-ask-and-receive-finally#.U1VHY2GPLIU
For example:
•    Why am I dating someone now who is wonderful and the perfect match for me?
•    Why are we both so happy that we’re the perfect match for each other?
•    Why is it natural and easy to find the person of my dreams?
•    Why am I having the most fulfilling and loving relationship I could imagine?
•    Why are my partner and I getting married and creating a wonderful family life together?

3)
Write your Afformations in a journal, and read and recite them aloud daily for the next 40 days. Also note in your journal any realizations you have during this process. And if any other non-empowering thoughts or beliefs arise related to this area, simply turn them into positive Afformations and add them to you daily list!  

Fact: Improve Your Thoughts and You’ll Improve Your Life

And so dear CS and all my readers – simple steps like these are your keys to fulfillment and freedom. So grab the keys and get out of the trunk and back into the driver’s seat of your precious life. Consciously choose and practice thoughts that reflect your heartfelt desires.  Trust that your desires are coming to you to tell you what is already being created for you. This is one of the main reasons we are here – to enjoy the miracle of life on this miraculous planet Earth!

The Right Way to Ask and Receive – Finally!

I hear and read about using affirmations. I’ve tried them, but I usually don’t believe what I’m affirming.  How can I achieve my dreams if my head is full of conscious and unconscious thoughts that don’t support what I’m asking for? Help! JJ

Dear JJ,
I hear you loud and clear!  Positive affirmations can have value, and are intentions that help to keep our minds directed and focused on the things we want vs. what we don’t want to experience. But the problem with affirmations is that they often kick up the dust of rascally hidden beliefs that are in resistance to those affirmations, making it sometimes difficult if not impossible to achieve them.

There are many methods available for clearing conscious and unconscious false and limiting thoughts and beliefs. And this is certainly a worthwhile pursuit and activity; because when we do this, it’s like we are clearing clouds that have been blocking the sunshine and radiance of who we truly are – empowered loving souls who are here for a human experience!  From this perspective, we’re not so much healing as we are revealing our true nature.

The Book of Afformations

Recently, I came across a book that I believe offers a groundbreaking approach to this successful clearing and revealing process, through a form of questioning.  It’s called, “The Book of Afformations” by Noah St. John.  Afformations are not affirmations!  Big difference!  Read on…

According to Noah, what’s really happening when we attempt to change our lives is this:  

  1. You are living in your “current perceived reality”.
  2. What you want is to be someplace else. For example, you want to change your body, finances, love life, work, lifestyle, etc.  This is called your “new desired reality”.
  3. Between your current perceived reality and your new desired reality is what Noah calls “the belief gap”, which is the space between where you are and where you want to be.

Belief gaps may vary in size depending on the person.  “The bottom line?” says Noah, “Until you cross your individual Belief Gap for each result, outcome, or experience you want in your life, it will be very difficult for you to make the leap to reach the new life and create the new reality you desire.”

In his book, Noah teaches us how to bridge the belief gap with questions that point our minds in the direction of answers and what we want, instead of what we don’t want.

Time to Hop Across the Belief Gap

Noah explains how our minds are programmed to answer questions. They’re like computers in that way.  When you ask a question, your mind automatically begins to search for answers.  So, if we’re using self talk like this: “Why can’t I be successful with my work?”or “Why am I so broke?” – our minds give us answers to those questions – like this: “You can’t be successful because…” or “You’re so broke because…” looking for and providing all the reasons why we’re not successful and why we’re broke!  

Whereas if we ask the questions like this: “Why am I successful with my work?” or “Why am I spending less than I earn?” – our minds will look for answers and actions to support those questions – like this: “You’re so successful with your work because…” or “You’re spending less than you earn by…”.

This is a subtle but very powerful shift in how to use our minds to support what we want.  The subtle difference and power shift into the direction of experiencing our heartfelt desires comes from an empowering question, not an affirmation.

I agree with Noah, as he explains that we create our lives, minute by minute, with the statements we make to ourselves and others, and by the questions we ask ourselves.  And that by switching to and regularly asking ourselves empowering questions, we can unleash our ability to take action and express Who We Truly Are!

Reveal and Live Who You Truly Are

He provides a very simple and easy method for identifying our conscious and unconscious ‘clouding’ beliefs, followed by a specific format for asking empowering questions directed at clearing the clouds to reveal the path and experience of what we truly want.  Honestly, this approach was not all what I expected!  But it works!  I’m using it and my clients are using it successfully too!

I have a feeling no one noticed we did not post an Ethnic Exploration at the end of last month. It slipped through the cracks as we both found ourselves wrapped up with individual, Duo and group related projects and events. We’ve do try to maintain a regular posting schedule, especially when it comes to the monthly Guest Test Kitchen and Ethnic Exploration features. Last week I sent an text to Amir that said “Um, did I ever write the Austrian EE?” There were at least 17 question marks and exclamation points, but I’ll spare you the overkill. I accept full responsibility for dropping the ball! You guys are always so forgiving and understanding, so we know that you’ll let it slide. When you see the Austrian sweet treat that landed on our plates, you’ll let it slide with a smile.

My entire past week was spent experiencing the many different cultures and environments during a cross country road trip from Virginia to California. What I discovered, (or should I say confirmed), is that we are the best pet owners in the nation! First, let me acknowledge that I’m perfectly aware how impossible it is for me not to be biased on the subject since I was born and raised here. Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, hooray Californians! We are the BEST! Not only do we live the good life, our pets do too! They’re the most exotic, talented, happy and loyal pets I’ve seen, and it only took a handful of states to compare to for me to realize it.

There’s something about canning that has an air of nostalgia to it. Perhaps your grandparents were the ones who first introduced you to this idea. Or, your parents perhaps. Neither one of us comes from a family of canners, but we do have interest. It’s the perfect way to preserve seasonal freshness of fruits or vegetables when they are at their peak. Almost anything can be canned–tomatoes, beans, peaches, rinds and seeds. It’s an easy, inexpensive way to have food at the tips of your fingers when their season for availability may be far off. Sometimes, though, you just can to can. Not because you necessarily want summer corn in the dead of winter, but just because you want something to break through the boredom of a slow Saturday afternoon. Unequipped with tongs and mason jars, you can still pull off a means of veggie preservation. You can always find a way around an obstacle.

Interior Design - Hamptons Design

One of my favorite design styles is that of The Hamptons in New York. The fresh, clean look is inspirational. The crisp feel of the light or natural colored linen slip covered over a soft cushy sofa or overstuffed chair really sets the tone. Paired with a beautifully dark stained plank floor or a whitewashed floor, lightweight linen or cotton drapery panels adds to the feel and atmosphere needed to achieve this look.

Not to be mistaken with Shabby Chic, the style is slightly more void of the floral, plaids and weathered looking furniture. You’re more likely to see traditional case good pieces in fused with lightly colored fabrics, some reclaimed pieces along with shutters or even wooden blinds on the windows. Here are a few tips to help you achieve The Hamptons look without breaking the bank.

1. Start with light colors. Use beige, sage green, pale green/blue on the walls.
2. Try adding wainscoting painted white for architectural interest.
3. Earth toned or light colors works well for window treatments in cotton or linen.
4. Pair linen upholstered chairs with a rustic or reclaimed wooden table in the dining room. Accent the table with glass hurricanes and candles for the centerpiece.
5. Wicker framed chairs with a great light upholstered sofa and a glass coffee table can work well for a living room. Add nautical styled pillows for accents.
6. Keep accents simple. Wicker baskets, plants, sea grass or jute rugs can finish off a space.

Just remember to be careful when designing your space. Never over do your style. You won’t achieve your desired look and will appear too trendy. Less is more in some cases.
