HIIT it Hard!

One of the most common excuses for not exercising is not having enough time.

It is no surprise that we live on the go with our busy schedules, but unfortunately, many of us get so caught up living this way that we forget to make time for our own physical health. Yes, time does fly by, as we’ve addressed, but that is no excuse to neglect the importance of exercise. Luckily for us, there is a style of exercise that is becoming increasingly popular in the world of fitness.

In this article, we will discuss the training method known as High-Intensity Interval Training and its many benefits. Let’s dive in!

High-Intensity Interval Training (commonly referred to as HIIT) is a simple concept through which optimal fitness levels can be reached. HIIT is a workout routine that alternates intervals of intense activity with periods of active recovery or complete rest. Put simply, it is this; exercising at maximum effort for a short period of time, followed by a period of recovery, and repeat. The times and intervals can be adjusted to one’s liking. Research shows that more progress can be achieved in 15 minutes of HIIT (three times a week) than by jogging for an hour on a treadmill. Who doesn’t have 15 minutes to spare for the well-being of their body? That’s what I thought! Not only does High-Intensity Interval Training solve the lack of time issue, but it also proves to be effective. Studies show that HIIT workouts allow for the preservation of lean muscle while the loss of weight comes from the fat stores. One study found that after 8 weeks of HIIT, exercisers could cycle twice as long as they could at the beginning of the study. Another study proves an increase in metabolism by showing that HIIT stimulates the production of growth hormone up to 450% during the first 24 hours after the workout. In other words, if we can set aside 15 minutes in our day for a quick & intense workout, we will be able to reap a ton of benefits including a healthy heart, slow aging process, and melting of fat!

Now that we have established the effectiveness of the HIIT method, let’s also understand that these workouts can be done ANYWHERE and do not require equipment.

Although there are gyms solely dedicated to High-Intensity Interval Training, it can also be done in the park, on the beach, in an apartment, or anywhere else we can think of. Since the focus is keeping up the heart rate, equipment is not always necessary. The only thing we need is 15 minutes or more. Yes, the concept of HIIT is simple, but by no means is the workout easy. Keeping our heart rate at maximum levels for over 15 minutes is much harder than it sounds. However, an accomplished body and mind await us on the other side of those challenging minutes.

In conclusion, a lack of time is no longer an excuse for those who so easily put aside the importance of fitness. High-Intensity Interval Training could very well be an answer to what prevents many of us from having an exercise life. HIIT proves to offer numerous health benefits and can easily be implemented into one’s daily schedule. For those on the go, 15 minutes in your living room is all that is needed. For those who do have the time, HIIT gyms are on the rise

including Barry’s, Orange Theory, and personal favorite Base Camp Fitness. Why not take a class? What better time to start getting healthy (while saving time) than the start of a brand New Year? Above all else, let’s take action towards our health and well-being.

Connor Coman works as a certified personal trainer in the Hollywood/Beverly Hills area. His training experience stems from a background in competitive gymnastics, track & field, and collegiate baseball.

Coman spent a year training a wide range of clientele at Golds Gym before being inspired to start his own personal training business.

Today, he trains mostly out of Ultra Body Fitness, an exclusive private training gym in Hollywood. Focusing on weight training in the gym, his client list includes both men and women, celebrity, and elderly. Coman continues to learn as he, himself, has a personal trainer, Charles Glass. Glass is known as the "Godfather" of personal training. 

Coman believes that there is one common goal among exercisers and that is "to lose body fat." He states that this can be done by first "making a true commitment to oneself to take the necessary steps in order to gain control of one's physical health." Those steps include "cardiovascular training, resistance training, and above all, proper nutrition."

Coman has recently found a new passion in writing and acting. He now uses his background, knowledge, and experience in the field of training to stay sharp on his path towards his goals in the entertainment industry.
