Designing for Less - The Kitchen

Designing for Less is a short series about simple fixes and design tips for the budget conscience. We’ll be looking at the kitchen, bathroom, living areas and bedrooms.

Let’s start with what most consider the heart of the home; the kitchen. I’ve seen many clients in the past that had no idea what to with their dated kitchen. They also didn’t want to spend their kid’s college fund, their retirement account or take out a home equity loan either. So what’s in a kitchen? You have appliances, countertops, cabinets and flooring and even windows. Where to start and what to spend? Cabinets and counters can bust a budget, but you still really want to have that ‘wow’ kitchen.

Look at simple things to create a new look. You can paint your cabinets and add hardware. Most discount stores and the large home improvement stores have a hardware section. Choose knobs and drawer pulls that fit your house and your style. Just be aware some can cost about $1.00 and go up from there. Now choose a paint color for your cabinets. Make sure you use a semi-gloss for ease of care. Be sure to do a light sanding to take off any residue or old paint. Then prime and you’re ready to paint! Just know this could have a ‘snowball’ effect. You might want to think about the walls, too.

If you want to accessorize your kitchen there are a few things you can do. Think about changing your towels to something bright and fun or add some kitchen themed art. Find a new canister set, too. You’re only limited by your imagination. But remember, you don’t need to complete this all at once. Just make a design plan and set a goal and you’ll be finished in no time at all.
