Simple tips for home organization

Many times we are faced with the issue of space, storage and organization.

Not every home is able to hold and store all of our possessions. So what do we do?  We try to create clever ways of hiding and even camouflaging the things we need and use daily or even occasionally.  Here are a few tips I found helpful in my own struggles to stay organized and somewhat clutter free.

  1. Storing linens.    If you’re like me, you may have a liking for bedding with a linen closet that is never big enough.  An easy way to store bedding is to keep each set in a pillow case.  Simply fold all the pieces and insert into one of the cases.  That way you’ll not only see what you have easily, but each set is self-contained.
  2. Toiletries.  I’ve been in a few houses where they didn’t have a medicine chest in the bathroom.  I saw things were just thrown into drawers or even an old shoebox under the sink.  That just seemed like a very hard way to store and find things.  Why not try something simple?  I found using a simple silverware holder comes in very handy for storing toothpaste/ brushes, combs, etc.  Of course that’s just one option.  Bigger box or discount stores have loads of options for organization with many price points to fit any budget.
  3. Comforters.  Many of us have issues storing our down comforters for the summer.  And with our weather here in Southern California that can become an issue year round.  I found using a king size pillow case works well in this instance.  Make sure to really fold the comforter tightly ensuring all the air is removed for easy storage.  It may take up an entire shelf, but it’s worth it.
  4. Tool box storage.   A lot of us have a junk drawer in the kitchen with tools, tape, pens/pencils, etc.  I know rummaging though it to find the right sized screw driver can be a bit unnerving.  Why not try using shoe storage that can be hung behind the pantry door.  They are usually made of clear plastic so you can easily see what you’re looking for.  It makes hunting for the right tool, glue or even tape that much faster.

I hope these quick storage and organization tips can make a part of your day a bit easier.
