At the end of the day we all look forward to our comfortable bed. I know for myself, that I love the feel of great sheets; the softer the better. But how do we achieve that ultimate satisfaction? Well, it’s in the thread count and knowing what it really means.

Many think the higher the count the better the sheet. But that usually comes with a higher price tag and a little maintenance. Some actually require a light ironing due to the density of the fabric. It also means a heavier sheet over the body.

But what is thread count anyway? Thread count is the number of threads per one square inch of fabric. The texture of the fabric is directly affected by the thickness and type of thread used. For a higher thread count, sometimes a two-ply yarn is used as well as using extra yarns called picks, which are inserted into the weft of the fabric. Weft is the horizontal thread woven together.

Over the last 20 years or so, many of us started to really pay attention to thread counts. I remember it was going to a 300 count when I started to really learn about sheets. My first really good set was a 240-thread count. I thought I hit the jackpot. Today I love my 600 count sheets, which are just perfect. They have a great ‘hand’ and are pretty durable and require little maintenance. I’ve tried a 1020 thread count and seem a bit too heavy. However, that might be a great winter sheet. No matter what the actual thread count, make sure you find a set that works for you.
