Summer is here and it's a time of travelling for many families. But even if you're not traveling for pleasure this summer (the fabled "corporate road warrior"), there's plenty of ways to eat healthy and feel great while "on the road" and on vacation.
Here are my Top 5 ways to Eat Healthy while traveling this summer:
#1. Choose a hotel or Airbnb that's near a grocery store. This is really the best way to have easy, convenient, and low cost access to fruits and vegetables and salad bars. You can also stock up on healthy snacks like nuts, granola bars and dried fruit.
#2. Drink plenty of water. The body needs water for almost all of its functions. Drinking lots of water will flush your body of toxins and help you eat less. It'll also help to reduce cravings, and reduce any jet-lag symptoms or tiredness from driving too much.
Tip: Bring a water bottle and fill it up at the hotel fitness center's water cooler, which is usually cold and filtered.
#3. Eat with a local. Many hosts on Airbnb will include (or charge a small fee) for a home cooked meal. This makes for a great cultural immersion activity too if you're in another country. If you're staying in a hotel, websites such as www.mealsharing.com and www.withlocals.com/experience/eat-with-locals and apps like EatWith can be a great resource to connect you with local families and chefs and groups to get a quality home-cooked meal.
4. Eat smaller portions more frequently. When you eat small amounts of healthy foods throughout your day, it signals your brain that the food supply is plentiful, so it's okay to burn through those calories quickly. Eating too many calories in one meal however, sends a message to the brain that leaner times must be around the corner, so those calories will get stored as fat. Eating too much at one sitting can also make you lethargic and tired.
